Getting familiar with Google Docs after MS Word

14th December 2015

By denis

Most of us have become quite skilled with using Microsoft Word over the past years. But now in the age of cloud technologies more and more people understand the reliability of the cloud in comparison with on-premises solutions and move their workspace to the platforms like Office 365 or Google Drive. Take care of your Google account security settings: create a strong password and backup Google account to another cloud, and there will be no need for any more worries.

If you have chosen Google above Office you may find it a little bit difficult to adopt the new interface as it is slightly different from what you have got used to. But have no fear, once you learn some tips you will see that Google Docs and Google Sheets are even more convenient than Word and Excel.

Change the text style easily

Google Docs supports over 450 different font styles. By default the text you type is 11-point Arial and the headings are Trebuchet, which is, probably, one of the best solutions for the screen typography. However you can always change it manually yourself if you want to apply some specific design for your document.

Use templates for Google Slides and Documents

If you need to create many documents for public access you may need to make them visually attractive. If you are not a designer you may find it rather difficult and in this case the templates may help. There was a huge template library available with Microsoft. Don’t worry, you can find it in Google as well. I have written in one of the previous articles how to set up document templates in Google.

Enjoy Google Docs’ clip art

There are no native images built in Google Documents, but there are some workarounds. You can set up the clip-art add-on and enjoy Google’s library of predefined images. I have told in one of the previous articles how to use clip art in Google Docs, too.

Google account security settings: new threats to your data

The new technologies kill many fears, but bring new ones forth instead. With Google Drive you don’t need to fear that you will lose your files due to your computer crash. But you can lose your documents and images if you allow other people or third-party applications to access your Google Drive. In order to protect your data it is always nice to have a reserve copy in another cloud. Upsafe Google Drive backup will help you to do this. You can backup 5Gb of your Google Drive for free with our app and have no limitations with the premium account which is only $2 per user per month.
